MEDEM AGAN

In this time saturated with strong polarities and easy assumed absolute truths that bring (micro and macro) conflicts, the installation we present addresses, once again, a Classical concept. Indeed, engraved on the pronaos of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi appear, along with the famous gnoti seauton ( γνῶθι σαυτόν, Know thyself), two phrases: "certainty creates ruin" and "nothing too much". Pursuing the weighted measure of things might turn out to be one of the useful attitudes to get out of a dark and extreme time like ours. Our approach to reusing Serafini alabaster processing waste from Volterra therefore seeks to reduce the environmental impact of the entire process without distorting the natural essence of the stone. Since it is in fact often unsustainable to reuse such objects to make wonderful paving or other agglomerates, these scraps to date are mostly unused and ousted from production cycles, except with targeted projects. Through actions such as sorting, manipulation (modeling through manual labor) and reworking (actual creative act) of the tectonic concept of stone we have rethought some small elements. Thanks to alabaster's own properties of light transmission, lightness and strength (no veins), we then created a galactic/cosmic installation consisting of backlit hanging meteorites supported/supporting the light flow of our Fabric Flexible Light. Lifting the stone from its natural configuration, illuminating it from within, and uniquely numbering each piece are in our view actions that look at the concept of the "unique piece" as something naturally unrepeatable and worthy of knowledge and dissemination. We hope this installation may suggest a constructive reflection on the approaches necessary to avoid partial and trivial concepts of sustainability and to avoid falling into the simplification of a complexity that, as is often the case, cannot be understood except from the Study of Classicity.
